Some good reasons to host your site in Canada

Buying local isn't limited to products and services such as clothing and food. Canadian webhosts present many options and price ranges while remaining technically on par or in some cases more so, than US counterparts.

But that's just the first of many reasons to host your website in Canada.

Under Canadian law, protection of personal information is guaranteed through two federal laws: the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act for the private sector and the Privacy Act for the public sector. In addition, there are provincial laws that govern the use of personal information in Alberta, British Columbia, and Quebec that are considered to be equivalent to PIPEDA by the federal government and take precedence in those provinces. All businesses operating in Canada are subject to the applicable laws based on where they are located. These laws ensure that personal information is used in such a way that the privacy of the owner is protected and not abused.

Canada has privacy laws providing “adequate protection” of personal information. These laws are recognized by the E.U. where the United States employs no such protections. Also contrary to the US, privacy regulations, Canadian legal privacy is governned both federally and provincially by way of privacy commissioners and ombudsmen.

By hosting your website and collecting data in the United States you're in no way protected by Canadian law, instead, your site is under the legal jurisdiction of the United States.

If there are any issues with your hosting provider, the local court of where your hosting company keeps your data comes into play. This amounts to potential legel fees and travel costs in a country where your understanding of process is limited. There is a good chance this will never happen to you but it makes good sense to completely avoid the issue if possible.

Hosting in Canada has the added benefit of being recognized a such by Google. The search engine takes location into account when searches are made. Businesses and services seen as close or more local to the search are often presented in priority order.

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act also comes into play when choosing locations between Canada and the United States. The advantages in Canada are so apparent that more and more United States firms are now choosing to host their websites in Canada as well.

The DMCA is meant to take down illegal content stored within the United States. But as layed out, it means that if your site is stored in the US, alongside one containing illegal content, your site is will be arbitrarily shut down too. Alternatively, a Canadian web hosting company does not have to immediately comply with a DMCA take down request. A Canadian website hosting firm can isolate the problem site only, avoiding shutting down neighboring legitimate sites within the data centre.

As an added advantage, Canadian courts have rarely complied at all with DMCA take downs by ruling against the FBI and their attempts to come over the border

About .ca Domains

.ca Domain History

The first .ca domain was registered by the University of Prince Edward Island in January 1988 through the (then) registry of .ca domains at the University of British Columbia.

While COOLCOM is a registry of all TLD's it's important to know about the .ca domain and how it evolved in Canada.

.ca domains are the Internet country code top-level domain for Canada. All countries are assigned a top level domain (TLD) and in Canada, the domain name registry that operates and oversees canadian domain names is called the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA).

CIRA began the operation of the .ca domain name in 2000 and within eight years CIRA registered its one millionth .ca domain name. Since this time the .ca domain has (for various reasons) become a major asset to Canadian business wishing to succeed online.

COOLCOM was established in 1999 and became a major player in the registration of .ca domain names as well as all other TLDs and has since remained one of Canada's favorite suppliers of URLs.

COOLCOM's Canadian Domain name Registry was also one of the first to be approved by CIRA in Canada to register .ca domains.

But before that, COOLCOM was also one of the very few registries versed in the intricacies of the .ca domain application system before the management of CIRA took place. The forms were lengthy but COOLCOM assisted clients in wading through the information and questions related to registration.

It's important for several reasons to be sure to register a .ca domain not only with a CIRA approved registry but also to ensure that registry is Canadian based. This ensures your data is protected by Canadian Law which is more protective of Canadain data and your personal information.

.ca domains are registered in increments of one year (up to 9) and when not renewed fall into a system starting with "Expiry" followed by "Redemption" and finally release back into the system for new registration.

Canadian Business can benefit from having a .ca domain in part by ranking better in Google, a regionally (in part) criteria that the search engine takes into account.

Privacy and the .ca domain name registration process

Internet privacy and personal data has become a lively issue as of late, so it's also important to understand how CIRA handles yours when your .ca domains are registered.

With the exception of Corporate Registrations, all .ca domains are by default set to private; this is not a feature you should ever pay for.

Qualifying for a .ca domain; knowing the rules will help

In order to preserve the regional integrity of the .ca TLD, registrants must meet Canadian Presence Requirements as set out by CIRA; examples include:

  • a Canadian citizen of the age of majority
  • a permanent resident of Canada
  • a legally recognized Canadian organization
  • an Inuit, First Nation, Métis or other people indigenous to Canada
  • an Indian Band as defined in the Indian Act of Canada
  • a foreign resident of Canada that holds a registered Canadian trademark
  • a division of the government

Bad News! You Gave Up Your Display Window

If your site opens with a HUGE flower, a lovely hill of daisies, a massive building; you'd better be offering flowers, hills of daisies or big buildings because it's this impression; the Store Window, on which people ponder entry.

Any retail store will confirm the front window display is what sets the tone for the rest of the clients visit; it tells customers before they even see the rest of the store - what’s on sale, what’s new and why you should go in.

Now, before we move on, take a short moment to check out your website visitor stats. At Coolcom, those are right in your cPanel.

Is your home page getting 99.0% of all traffic and not much going onward to other pages of your website after that? If so, it’s time to rethink your presentation; your display window.

The most common reason for loss of good traffic at the home page, is that the “store window” isn’t telling anyone what’s new, what’s on sale or what’s going on in that site. People have little patience when the next site is but a Google click away.

The main offender? Template slotting.

There is an all too common use of giant huge massive pictures that have little to tell the visitor, followed by three smaller pictures below it, squares that get filled in because they’re in the template.

Templates can be a fabulous head start but also pose the danger of setting you up for some classic ways to give up traffic that came for a reason; often thanks to hard earned marketing dollars too.

Top Three unwanted results of slotting your message?

  • The visitor grows tired of waiting to load the page (templates are artistic but often not optimized)
  • The visitor doesn’t see what they came for (it's pretty but detached from the visitors expectation)
  • The visitor has to scroll endlessly, often to find nothing they came for (too many metaphor or unrelated graphics)

This is a tough one to avoid because most Online Site Builders are chalk full of this exact kind of template. But this is also a super vital point to dig at with your site, it will make the difference between traffic and no traffic. This is no time to be in a hurry.

Sure a few will find it a good opener; an actress will want her face seen larger than life, a director will want their latest film teaser filling the space. But a lawn care centre, a realtor, a cosmetics shop and a shoe store; these are far better off telling the landed visitor what’s new, what rocks and what’s on sale… well before making them scroll down never-ending visuals that often even have little to do with the site.

Bend the template to your needs – don’t let the template bend YOU to fit into it’s slots.

How can you avoid that even if html is not your forté? Easy.

Most Content Management tools, be they Weebly and Site Pad OR WordPress and Joomla, offer all kinds of templates. Think carefully about the one you choose, think about your customer and what you want to happen when they come to your site.

Pick one that lets you easily speak to THAT and speak to it quickly.

Remove elements that get in the way of this message; never fill in elements because they are there. If you can’t get that message out then move to another template.. don’t bend to it because you are tired of trying. This is your business, be diligent.

Header slides are hugely popular and can be VERY helpful. But there are rules to follow here too.

  1. Make sure it takes up less than half the top real-estate of your home page, if you can’t adjust that, pick a different template.
  2. That header should tell the visitor something important. A sale, The menu, New products, New policies. Just looking good is not enough in todays competitive online business market.

Your home page is your shot. Don’t miss the opportunity to say who you are and what you offer in trade for a lovely picture or clever metaphor.
